Understanding Yourself and Others at Work: Explore Our MBTI, DISC, and RIASEC Checks

A healthy workplace is built not only on skills and qualifications, but also on understanding how people think, communicate, make decisions, and prefer to contribute. This is why C4AIK has introduced three simple self-reflection checks: MBTI, DISC, and RIASEC.

These checks are not professional psychological diagnoses, and they do not determine whether someone is suitable for a job. Instead, they provide a starting point for better conversations, stronger teamwork, and more self-awareness.

Why understanding people at work matters

Leaders and supervisors work with people who have different communication styles, motivations, strengths, and preferred ways of engaging. Some team members enjoy taking initiative and making quick decisions. Others prefer careful analysis, stable routines, relationship-building, creativity, or practical action.

When these differences are misunderstood, a direct person may be seen as rude, a careful person may be seen as slow, a quiet person may be overlooked, or an enthusiastic person may be viewed as unfocused. Understanding preferences helps teams respond with greater fairness and respect.

How the three checks can help

  • MBTI encourages reflection on personality preferences, communication, decision-making, and ways of engaging with the world.

  • DISC focuses on workplace behaviour, including Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness.

  • RIASEC explores career interests through Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional activities.

For leaders and supervisors

Leaders can use these checks as conversation starters with their teams. The results may help a supervisor ask better questions: Does this team member prefer clear instructions or room to explore? Do they enjoy presenting ideas, organizing details, helping people, solving problems, or leading action?

The results should never be used to label people, deny opportunities, or make employment decisions on their own. A person is more than a category, and preferences can change with experience, responsibilities, culture, and circumstances.

For team members and followers

Team members can use the checks to reflect on the kind of work they enjoy, the environments where they feel effective, and the support they need to contribute well. They can also use the results to understand their supervisors and colleagues with more patience.

For example, a supervisor who is highly results-focused may communicate briefly and directly, while another may spend more time building consensus. Neither approach is automatically better. The key is learning how to work together respectfully and clarify expectations.

Use the results as a starting point

After completing a check, ask yourself:

  • What did I discover about myself?

  • Which activities give me energy?

  • How do I prefer to receive feedback?

  • What might others misunderstand about my communication style?

  • What can I do to make collaboration easier?

If your answers do not show a clear majority or pattern, you may retake the check and answer according to your natural preferences. There are no right or wrong results.
