The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) seeks a Protection Coordinator based in Abuja, Nigeria. DRC assists refugees and internally displaced persons worldwide and has operated in Nigeria since 2015, delivering protection and other assistance to conflict-affected populations in Borno, Adamawa, Sokoto and Zamfara states.

Overall purpose: Provide technical coordination, advisory, fundraising and representation for DRC Nigeria’s Protection sector; formulate technical strategy addressing root causes of displacement, contribute to solutions and enhance protection for hard-to-reach communities. The role supports implementation and country teams, represents DRC in technical fora and working groups, and supports fundraising and sector engagement. Frequent travel to area offices and field locations is expected.

Responsibilities:
• Provide technical advice throughout programme implementation.
• Lead development and rollout of the technical strategy and support the Country Strategy.
• Review proposals, reports, assessments and evaluations.
• Provide technical capacity building to teams and partners.
• Prepare learning products, SOPs, guidelines and good-practice materials.
• Guide teams and review protection incident reports, alerts and monitoring products.
• Assess Protection sector capacity gaps with government and stakeholders and support capacity-strengthening initiatives.
• Analyse Nigeria Protection sector challenges, trends, programmes and projects.
• Represent DRC in relevant clusters and working groups.
• Engage NGOs, donors and government to promote DRC’s Protection programme.
• Develop partnerships, identify funding opportunities and support fundraising.
• Produce advocacy materials and engage with global and regional initiatives.
• Perform other duties requested by the Head of Programme within the scope of the role.

Qualifications and experience:
• At least 5 years’ experience in protection, including at least 3 years at senior technical level.
• Experience with proposal and report writing.
• Experience drafting and reviewing technical SOPs, guidelines, technical papers and analysis.
• Experience representing organisations in clusters, working groups and technical bodies.
• Experience engaging stakeholders and supporting advocacy initiatives.
• Experience in protection monitoring, case management, PSS, legal assistance, GBV and protection advocacy is strongly preferred.
• Knowledge of sector best practices and humanitarian architecture.
• Full professional proficiency in English and ability to produce high-quality formal reports and communications.
• Bachelor’s degree in International Law, International Relations, Political Science, Social Work, Humanitarian Assistance, Sociology, Psychology or a related field.
• A master’s degree is an advantage.
• Capacity-building experience with national partners and knowledge of the Nigeria context are desirable.
• French fluency is desirable.

• Contract length: 1 year.
• Band: G1 – Non-Management, with a strong possibility of changing to F1 – Manager once anticipated funding is confirmed.

• Duty station: Abuja Country Office.
